Time magazine annually publishes a list of its 100 Most Influential People in the World. The categories include leaders, heroes, thinkers and artists. This year, my Microsoft XCG colleague, Jaron Lanier, was named to this list in the thinker category. Congratulations to Jaron!
Jaron is perhaps best known in technology circles for his pioneering work on virtual reality, but Jaron's interests and skills span music (composition and performance), the arts and technology and society. His recent book, You Are Not A Gadget, explores the power and effects of human-computer interaction in a deeply and socially connected world. It is a provocative and thoughtful discourse on the challenges and opportunities posed by technology. These are deep and subtle issues, practical and social, affecting commerce and culture.
